Defense
The isolated nature of Power over Fiber permits operation immune from electromagnetic pulse, EMI and RF effects. Examples of systems that can be powered by photonic power include the following:
- Data communication receivers
- Phased array radars
- Gauges, sensors and monitors
- Video surveillance systems
- Small motors and actuators
- Batteries
- Fuzing and destruct devices
- Micro satellites by use of free space optics
- Optical transceivers
Multiple power converters can be combined to offer up to 5 watts of output power, delivered over fiber or in free space.
Photonic power can offer the following cost and performance advantages for powering defense and security systems:
- Isolated power immune to noise, EMI, RF and electromagnetic pulses
- Rugged design able to withstand harsh environmental conditions
- Enhanced sensitivity resulting from the use of an EMI-free power source
- Flexible means of powering electronics and transmitting digital or analog data over same fiber medium
- Reduced weight resulting from use of lightweight fiber interconnection
- Elimination of the need for battery power sources
- Improved security through use of fiber that is less vulnerable to sniffing or line tapping
